In the 2007 December issue of House Beautiful magazine they spotlighted the 101 ornaments of the Christmas season. 

Included in the spotlight were two ornaments from the American designer, Abigail Pfeffer.  Her ornaments are hand blown and hand painted glass ornaments from Poland. 

 Included in the article were the Snowy Owl and Ming the Longevity Panda.  Both are works of art with unique detail and characteristics.

I have always thought part of the fun of the Christmas season is a return to the child-like, sillier aspect of Christmas time.  Viewing Christmas through the eyes of children helps you to return to your childhood memories of Christmas.  The fun you had in anticipation of Santa’s arrival, visiting with friends and relatives, and the wonderful gifts that you gave and received.

Much of the fun of Christmas has been handed down from generation to generation through the legends and traditions of the old country.  One that I love is the legend of the glass Christmas pickle.  The tradition is that on Christmas Eve a glass pickle ornament is hidden among other Christmas ornaments on the Christmas tree.  On Christmas morning the first child to find the pickle receives an extra surprise.

This legend was even made into a special rhyme which goes like this:

“To start a tradition that surely will last. Here’s a short story about the pickle of glass. The night before Christmas it’s hung on the tree. While everyone’s sleeping it’s done secretly. And on Christmas morning when you arise. The first one to find it will get a surprise.”

“Tally Ho” is a call by a rider to excite the hounds when a fox is spotted during a fox hunt.  This mainly British phrase was originated sometime in the 1700′s and is still used today. 

These days coyotes are hunted as much as the fox and seldom is either one killed.  The sport is enjoyed by horsemen as much for the ride and the day out as anything else.
